Shine21 is a charity that’s dedicated to enhancing the lives of children with Down’s Syndrome and passionate about supporting their families. We provide a wide range of support including Makaton training for parents, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational/Physiotherapy, resources library which contains books and equipment to support their child’s development and provide support for parents and expectant families with relevant and up-to-date information, and help with any decisions they may face.
Shine21 is just entering into our second year of operation, the funding we received from The Purey Cust Trust made a huge difference and allowed us to achieve our objectives despite the pandemic. The money received funded fourteen children were able to access a 1:1 Speech and Language online consultation with a trained therapist. During the consultation the parents were able to discuss their child’s development stage and needs. The consultation was followed up by the parents receiving a personalised therapy plan with activities and suggestions to aid the child’s development. Each child also received two online review sessions with the therapist.
The grant gave the families of Shine21 support during a time when many of them were feeling abandoned, due to statutory services decreasing during the covid-19 pandemic. One of the families who have benefited from the above support would also like to say a big thank you and show you the impact the above has had on both them and their children.
“Thank you! The telehealth sessions that ran over the Covid-19 lockdown, were an invaluable support that stepped in when the world seemed to step away. Statutory Speech and Language Therapy is never frequent enough and these sessions enabled us to ensure that our daughter was getting the input required to help her achieve her true potential. We are so very grateful that we were able to access these sessions”
